What is a non-healing Wound?
In a typical situation, your body fights hard to heal and repair injured skin tissue. When you get hurt, your body knows to stop the bleeding. It begins to fight against infection. As time goes by, the wound heals and your skin closes to protect the wounded area.
A non-healing wound is different. It gets stuck in the healing process and refuses to get better over a long period of time. Sometimes this delay in the healing process is because of other medical conditions such as arterial disease or diabetes. The longer a wound refuses to heal, the harder it may be to heal.
You have a non-healing wound, now what?
Bakersfield Heart Hospital's Center for Wound Healing has a trained team that specializes in treating chronic wounds and moving them through the healing process. They can evaluate you and your wound and then make a treatment plan to help your wound heal. Our team of wound experts has studied the most recent technology and can work with your primary physician to heal your wound.
When you meet with one of our wound care experts, they will review your medical history and examine you and your wound. Being sensitive and careful, they will use different tests to understand your wound. Then, they will work with you to make a personalized treatment plan to heal your wound.

Hyperbaric Medicine is based on one simple fact: oxygen heals. During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy a person is given 100 percent oxygen in a pressurized environment. When you combine pressure and oxygen, the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream increases. Essentially, oxygen sends a breath of fresh air into your wound and speeds the healing process.
Wounds need oxygen to heal. A non-healing wound is often low in oxygen. A wound that is not receiving enough oxygen is at risk for infection. Low oxygen levels also keep your body from healing the wound. Giving 100 percent oxygen to your body has many benefits:
The ability to preserve injured tissue
The ability to give hurt tissue 100% oxygen
The ability to heal your wound faster
The ability to control certain infections
The ability to grow new blood vessels
If you have a non-healing wound then Hyperbaric Medicine may help. Approved indications for Hyperbaric Medicine as it relates to wound care include:
Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome and Other Acute Traumatic Ischemias
Enhancement of Healing In Selected Problem Wounds
Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections
Delayed Radiation Injury (Soft Tissue and Bony Necrosis)
Compromised Grafts and Flaps
Acute Thermal Burn Injury
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works best when combined with other wound care treatments. A specialized wound care program will help ensure the best course of care for your condition.
